Thousands of Brazilians residing in the Washington DC region turned out early this Sunday to vote in a single voting center installed in a central hotel in the US capital.
This electoral precinct has some 14,500 registered voters, including Brazilian residents of Washington and seven states bordering the District of Columbia.
The Brazilian Consul General in Washington DC, Ambassador Joao Luiz Pareira, responsible for the voting center, told the voice of america that the day passed without any inconvenience during the morning.
“We have to follow the same rules as in Brazil to allow the participation of all those registered and keep things as calm and neutral as possible,” said the diplomat.
This voting center has six rooms and 20 electronic ballot boxes, added the official, who explained that the first voter counts in the morning indicate a greater participation than in the first round, where a little more than 5,500 voters voted in that precinct. .
Members of the Brito family went to vote in DC at mid-morning, carrying Brazilian flags, and told the VOA who vote for continuity in the command of the Brazilian central government “because of the successes in managing the economy” between the pandemic and the recovery, with “very good work,” said Prisilla Brito.
Others, like Mathilde Barbosa, explained to the VOA that polarization is more complicated than ever in his country, and that as a personal exercise he decided not to follow the noise of the news with a lot of misinformation, in addition to the false news that has clouded and generated a lot of confusion, he says.
“I have followed the campaign very focused on analyzing the proposals and recognizing that although we do not have suitable candidates, we must vote thinking about the future of our country for a strong government,” said Barbosa, who opts for a change of administration.
The election day for voting abroad began at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm and immediately they prepare the electronic system to count the votes and transmit it to the base of the Electoral System of Brazil, which will be added to the calculation general.
In Washington, some support groups, both for the official Jair Bolsonaro and for the candidate Luiz Ignacio Lula, are preparing to wait for the results in different places in the Brazilian community.
