The superhero genre has become so prolific that they are even dominating the field of series. Even sub-branches of it, such as crossover superpowers and adolescence/young adulthood, are becoming widespread phenomena, with examples like ‘Ms. Marvel’ or ‘Titans’ in the lead (we could even include ‘Stranger Things’ in the shortlist for the character of Eleven).
Before becoming so well-trodden ground that it has become commonplace, there were series with really cool teen superheroes and that they explored the uncharted terrain in which they found themselves. One of the most outstanding was, without a doubt, ‘Misfits‘, a British series broadcast by Channel 4 in his native country that can now be enjoyed streaming through HBO Max.
The series follows a group of five young people assigned to a Social Services center to carry out community work, to which they are forced after committing crimes of a different nature. One fine day a strange storm breaks out in the city, and after being struck by lightning they end up acquiring a series of special powers, partly linked to their different personalities. The series explores how they learn to control these unexpected powers, while discovering that there are mysteries happening around them that they must unravel.
In the first seasons we could follow the vicissitudes of these young people with abilities, among whom we saw actors who would later have a career in other important series such as Iwan Rheon (‘Game of Thrones’) or Robert Sheehan (‘The Umbrella Academy’). As it went on, the cast and the dynamics of the group of heroes changed, and the series suffered in part because of it. But in his best moments he had a freshness and a punk charisma that very few series with a similar suit have been able to match.
