Chess is one of humanity’s oldest games, so it’s surprising that it’s still relevant. In recent years and months it has gained a new wave of popularity thanks to multiple factors. Now, a website that allows you to play games online is so successful that, unfortunately, its servers suffer.

We are talking about Chess.com, a free chess platform. Although it is currently not experiencing its best moments in terms of popularity, it is precisely the excess of players that causes online services to have numerous problems.

Through a post on their official blog, those responsible for Chess.com talked about the increase in user traffic and the impact it has on the servers. They explain that during 5 days of this month new records of active players were established; they reached 10 million members on January 20th.

On the other hand, the mobile application enjoys great popularity. Specifically, it ranks number 2 in the category of most downloaded free games on the iOS store in the United States. In some countries, it is in the first position.

Chess is more alive than ever! Chess.com servers suffer from the increase in players

It is clear that many people want to play this classic board game from a computer or cell phone. Now, why this increase in interest? According to Chess.com, the boom is the result of multiple factors: since the series’ debut The Queen’s Gambit from Netflix to the photograph in which Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are seen playing chess. And yes, the COVID-19 pandemic also played a key role.

In the statement, those responsible for the platform explain that they will invest more money in hardware and infrastructure in the cloud. In addition, they plan to make adjustments to the databases. However, these problems are far from simple.

“Honestly, this sucks. We know that you are here to play chess and enjoy. It’s very frustrating to search for a match and instead get an error or game over. We don’t take this lightly and hope to have a better and more stable experience later this week. Some major changes will be underway in 2-3 weeks, and we hope they will allow us to properly handle the next wave of enthusiasm for chess,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, players are having trouble finding matches or getting disconnected mid-game. It seems that they will have to deal with these inconveniences for a few more days, although with any luck the situation will improve in the coming weeks.
