The leader of the British Reform party, the populist Nigel Farage, suffered an incident this Tuesday when, upon leaving an event in the town of Clacton, a young woman threw a liquid, apparently a milkshake, in his face and on his suit.
Farage was leaving the interior of a pub after speaking with several journalists about his announcement on Monday, when he announced not only that he was taking the reins of the Reform party, but that he was also running for the parliamentary elections on July 4.
When he left the premises, a group of journalists, curious and also detractors, was waiting for him. At that moment, a young woman threw the contents of a cardboard cup in his face, according to Sky News. Images of the incident are already circulating on social networks.
Later, Essex County Police confirmed the arrest of a 25-year-old woman accused of throwing the drink. During the suspect’s arrest, officers detained a man for allegedly assaulting an emergency worker.
This is not the first time that the populist leader has suffered a similar incident, since five years ago, in the run-up to the European elections, a milkshake was also thrown at him in the city of Newcastle. The author had to compensate Farage with 350 pounds.
‘TORIES’ AND LABOR CONDEMN WHAT HAPPENED
The event has sparked criticism from across the British political spectrum, and even the Home Secretary, James Cleverly, has spoken out about it. “The attack on Nigel Farage is unacceptable, as it would be for any candidate,” he said.
“There is no excuse to resort to behavior like this. We may disagree, but we debate and then we vote. That is democracy,” Cleverly stated on his official profile on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Labor head of Home Affairs, Yvette Cooper, has regretted the “shameful”, “completely unacceptable and wrong” attack against Farage. “No one should suffer intimidation or aggression in an electoral campaign,” she stressed.
For his part, the president of the Reform party, Richard Tice, has assured that his party “will not be intimidated or threatened”, and has charged against the “young idiot” who has thrown the shake at Farage. “He has made us win hundreds of thousands of votes,” he said.
