The Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and the Press (ICLEP) recorded “a record” of violations against the press, as reported in a statement released Monday.
The findings indicate that there are “140 acts of violation against the Cuban press during the month of July, a figure that set a repressive record during 2022.”
The ICLEP indicates that it counted “96 cases of arbitrary arrests, 22 restrictions in the digital space and the same number of threats and psychological attacks.”
The Institute affirms that the record previously registered was that of the month of May, with 84 acts against members of the press on the island.
“The greatest aggressions were concentrated in the days before, during and after the first anniversary of the protests anti-government protests on July 11 (J11) in Cuba. On this occasion, the Cuban dictatorship committed 126 acts of violation against 46 journalists,” the institute indicates.
According to ICLEP, the affected communicators include, among others, Henry Constantin and Neife Rigau, both from the media The time of Cuba, Boris González Arenas and Jorge Amado Robert Vera (Cuban Journal), Camila Acosta and Maria Matienzo (Cubanet), Luzbely (Luz) Escobar (14y Medium) and Yunia Figueredo (freelancer).
The NGO also points out that during the year there have been 409 acts against journalists who exercised their profession.
