The main opposition party in South Korea, the People’s Power Party (PPP), presented this Friday a new impeachment motion against the country’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, in response to the controversy unleashed as a result of the statement last week. passed martial law, which was revoked just a few hours later by Parliament.
The PPP has thus opened a new process before Parliament that could end with the departure of the president, as confirmed by the formation, which has clarified that the measure will be put to a vote this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (local time), as stated. I anticipated.
Parliament will vote on the measure just a week after another impeachment motion failed due to a lack of support in the Lower House. The government party, which then voted against, has undergone internal changes since then. According to sources close to the matter, at least seven deputies from said party are expected to vote in favor of removing the president, which places the opposition just one vote away from achieving its objective.
For the measure to go ahead, votes in favor of two-thirds of the Chamber are necessary, 200 deputies out of a total of 300, although the opposition has 192 seats. However, the leader of the PPP himself, Han Dong Hoon, has been doubtful in recent days.
On Thursday, Yoon defended his decision during a televised speech to the nation, in which he assured that he sought to “protect” the country from “forces contrary to the State”, statements that support the position taken by the president during the last week, since who announced the measure hiding behind the existence of an alleged tendency among the opposition “friendly to North Korea.”
The new text of the motion includes accusations against Yoon for giving instructions to the security forces to detain opposition deputies during the few hours in which martial law was in force, a decision for which several senior officials have already had to apologize. among them the former Minister of Defense, who is in custody.
However, the accusations against the first lady, Kim Keon Hee, – at the center of the controversy and the decline in the president’s popularity in recent months – have been withdrawn.
