In computerbase They wanted to confirm some rumors that the new Radeon RX 7900 XTX could exceed 3.0 GHz, and They have managed to overclock up to 3.5 GHz. However, these speeds are only achieved at specific times and in specific compute workloads. In the specific case, they have managed to reach 3.5 GHz in the Blender rendering software, approaching 400 W of consumption. The tests have been carried out with the Sapphire Radeon RX 7900 XTX Nitro+ Overclocked.
In Games it is not possible to reach that figure without reaching the energy limits of the graphics card. At just under 3.0 GHz, the graphics card can be overclocked without exceeding the maximum power limit that the 500W GPU can support in games.
According to their conclusions, the Radeon RX 7970 XTX still has overclocking headroom over the RTX 4080, which is already running at its limits. However, the consumption of the AMD solution is much higher than that of NVIDIA as soon as it is overclocked.
In any case, this confirms AMD’s claims that its RDNA 3 architecture would be capable of exceeding 3 Ghz, although it seems that it is easier to do so in computing tasks than in games.
