They issue a red alert due to heavy rains in Tegucigalpa and announce evacuations

( Spanish) –– The authorities of the mayor’s office of Tegucigalpa, capital of Honduras, reported this Sunday that the level of the Choluteca River channel is on red alert, so officials from emergency agencies have been deployed along the bank.

In a brief statement, the mayor’s office announced without giving further details that “people who may be at risk will be evacuated” and they will be transferred to shelters.

The head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Rooselvet Leonel Hernández Aguilar, announced that monitoring of the limits of the river is ongoing.

“In all these types of situations, one resource is always important and that is time. Time allows us anticipation and at this moment we already have information that both the dam, the Coyolar and the Concepción, which are the dams that converge and all the waters flow here, in this sector, into the flow of the Choluteca River ”, reported the military command.

Tropical Storm Sara — which is now a depression advancing in the Yucatan Peninsula — affected more than 85,000 people and caused damage to communication routes, leaving more than 1,000 populations in rural areas isolated.

According to the Government of Honduras, due to the rain storm caused by Sara, one person has been reported dead, four more injured and more than 3,500 people have been rescued.
