Rescue teams on Thursday found the bodies of two women who disappeared when their car fell into a sinkhole that suddenly opened on Saturday on an avenue in a municipality south of Guatemala City.
Firefighters and rescuers used tractors, backhoes and hand shovels until they located the black vehicle some 30 meters deep, buried by tons of earth. Firefighters confirmed that both bodies were inside.
Olga Emilia Choz, 38, and her daughter Mishell Mejía Choz, 15, fell into the hole on Saturday at 6 pm. Choz’s husband, Adolfo Mejía, was rescued alive, but had to amputate two fingers on his left hand after he injured himself trying to rescue his daughter.
That same day another vehicle fell into the hole, from which three people were rescued alive. Information also emerged that a motorcycle had fallen, but so far it has not been located, nor are there reports of others missing.
In videos captured by firefighters, the car could be seen crushed and covered in dirt with the two women inside, one in the passenger seat and the other in the back. Relatives of the deceased went to the area to identify them.
After the extraction, the prosecutor’s office reviewed the place. Juan Luis Pantaleón, spokesman for the Public Ministry, said that a criminal case has not been opened.
The family was returning home at the weekend after selling clothes at a local market. The constant rains in Guatemala have cracked streets and highways, which have not received adequate maintenance and this makes them prone to this type of sinkhole.
