9 Jan. (Portaltic/EP) –
A Japanese developer named aromajoin has designed a technology that digitizes the aroma of images and videos and translates them into smells that users can enjoy while viewing.
This device, which is called Scent Shooter, It has been presented within the framework of the largest consumer electronics fair in the world CES, which took place at the beginning of January in Las Vegas (United States).
In this space, Aromajoin has unveiled Aroma Shooter as an aroma diffuser that expels different odors depending on what viewers are seeing on the screen, be it a video or a scene from a movie.
In this way, if one of the characters walks through a forest in a certain shot of the audiovisual content, the viewer will be able to smell the essence of pines, eucalyptus or mimosas that surround you.
Aroma Shooter is a device that fits in the palm of one hand, measuring 8.2 cm in length and weighing 159 grams (177 grams if loaded). Total, may hold up to six cartridges at a time.
The diffuser is portable, comes with a diffusion distance of 60 centimeters, is charged via USB-C cable, and has Bluetooth LE and WiFi connections. Also, works with an app which has versions for both Android and iOS and Windows.
However, the company has indicated that it has a ‘software’ development kit (SDK, for its acronym in English) to support other operating systems and “to push the aroma to the limit”, as can be read in their website.
To digitize the aroma of the elements seen on the screen, this aroma diffuser “abandons liquid or gaseous media, such as oils, mist or steam” and offers solid cartridges to provide a more intense scent.
Aromajoin also offers cartridges with different scents through its website (including mango, orange, wine, asphalt or soy sauce), so that you can customize this experience to the taste of consumers.
The company also ensures that this ‘gadget’ is capable of alternating scents in 0.1 seconds, so that one scent can erase another at high speed to maintain the immersive format of the experience. With this, the Japanese manufacturer points out that odors “never linger” in the environment.
In addition to the fact that you can mix the different aromas available, which are priced at 54 dollars per cartridge (around 50.30 euros at the current exchange rate), the intensity of each cartridge can be individually graduated.
This device is already available for sale and, as Aromajoin points out on its website, the complete kit (with Aroma Shooter, six aroma cartridges, an SDK kit and USB-C cable) is sold for 109,780 yen (774 euros to change) for users residing outside the European Union.
