( Spanish) — The Ministry of Health of Peru confirmed that to date 201 people have died due to the dengue epidemic outbreak that mainly affects the northern part of the country.
According to the daily report of the health authorities, so far there have been 137,000 confirmed cases of this disease, which is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito from a sick patient to a healthy one.
The Minister of Health of Peru, Rosa Gutiérrez, said this Sunday in an interview with TV Peru that the rate of dengue infections fell by up to 60% in 15 regions due to the actions carried out by health personnel, including fumigation to prevent the spread of the mosquito that transmits this disease.
The official explained that “of 20 regions, 15 have already fallen beyond 40%, at this time. Many of them are above 60% of the decline. What does this mean? That the control in these regions has had a high impact and we have minor cases, but that does not mean that we are going to lower our guard ”.
The authorities also announced this Monday, according to the Andean Agency, that the buildings of the Villa Panamericana will be enabled to deal with dengue cases in Lima. These structures were also used as a care center during the covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, it was announced that the Plenary of Congress will vote in the next session if it admits a motion for interpellation presented by several legislators against the Minister of Health for handling the dengue outbreak. Given this, at a press conference, the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, said on Friday that she hopes that Parliament “resolves this request for interpellation” of the minister.
