“They are not going to intimidate us, they are not going to intimidate us,” warn protesters against Boluarte in Lima

The demonstration in Lima to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, with the majority participation of people coming from the Andean regions, led to violent clashes with law enforcement on Thursday.

Resignation of President Boluarte, the sanction for those responsible for the more than forty deaths by shots from the security forces, the closure of the Congress controlled by the right, elections for this year 2023 and a Constituent Assembly, and some sectors also the liberation of former President Castillo, are the main demands that were heard in the slogans through the streets of downtown Lima in the massive demonstration.

“We are being very clear in our orders, it is a common platform at the national level. What is taking place in this country is a massacre”, says the social leader Olinda Vertel.

Delegations from different regions of the country arrived in the Peruvian capital, especially from the Andean areas. According to the authorities, more than 11,000 police officers gathered in the center of the city. The policemen fired tear gas canisters at the demonstrators, who responded by throwing stones and bottles.

“They are not going to intimidate us, they are not going to intimidate us. How does Mrs. Boluarte pretend to want to talk when they are pointing a gun at our classmates”, says Leonela Labra, a student leader from the Andean Cusco.

Svetia Fernández, leader of the Tacna region, on the border with Chile, says: “The most oppressed classes, the emerging classes, who have been relegated for many years, come to demonstrate.”

The protest mobilization on Thursday in Lima began at noon and lasted until night. There were protests in various regions of the country. In Arequipa there was a death.

“We regret the death of a person during clashes on the Añashuayco bridge, a road that is located in the north of the city,” the Ombudsman’s Office said on Twitter, asking the prosecutor’s office for a quick investigation of the facts to determine responsibilities.

The death brought the total death toll to 45 -44 civilians and one police officer- since the crisis broke out on December 7.
