The US government and numerous Latin American leaders, among others, congratulated the elected president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, after becoming the first woman in the history of the country who will have the responsibility of leading it.
Through messages on social network X, the presidents of Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia and Cuba -all from the left-, congratulated Sheinbaum for his victory. It will be the current president Manuel López Obrador, of the same political orientation as his colleagues, who will hand him over in October.
López Obrador himself described on Monday as a “historical fact” the results of the general elections that gave victory to his candidate with a wide advantage over the opposition Xóchitl Gálvez, from the coalition formed by a conservative party (the PAN), one leftist (the PRD) and the one who governed Mexico for seven decades of the 20th century (the PRI), and about Jorge Álvarez Máynez of the small Citizen Movement force.
“We spoke yesterday, I congratulated her, I am very happy because imagine what it means to hand over the presidency to a woman after 200 years” since Mexico’s independence, the president said in his morning press conference. “Also, the most voted candidate in the history of Mexico,” he added.
The still Mexican president called Sheinbaum “a woman with a lot of experience in the art of governing,” but “above all, an honest woman.”
Her victory is an important step for Mexico, a country known for its sexist culture and home to the second-largest Roman Catholic population in the world, which for years promoted more traditional values and roles for women.
The US and the UN congratulate the president-elect
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, said in a statement, congratulating Sheinbaum on her historic election and adding that she looks forward to working closely with the president-elect in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects “the enduring ties between our two countries.”
Biden ratified his commitment to promoting the values and interests of both nations for the benefit of “our people.” He also congratulated the Mexican people for carrying out a successful national democratic electoral process that included races for more than 20,000 positions at the local, state and federal levels.
Later, the White House reported that the US president spoke with the president-elect and that both expressed “their commitment to continuing their strong and collaborative partnership that serves to advance democracy, security and prosperity in both countries.”
For its part, the US State Department also issued a statement on Monday congratulating her on her historic victory as Mexico’s first female president.
“We also congratulate the people of Mexico for making their voices heard through the democratic process. I look forward to continuing to strengthen the strong alliance between the United States and Mexico with President-elect Sheinbaum,” said the statement signed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
He added that “We deeply value our special relationship with Mexico, which is based on shared democratic values, deep economic ties, and strong cultural and family connections.”
The United States is committed to working together with Mexico as neighbors, friends and partners to advance mutual economic and security interests, he added. “I extend my best wishes to President-elect Sheinbaum and the people of Mexico,” Blinken said.
For its part, the UN System in Mexico joined in the congratulations and highlighted that “she is the first woman to assume the highest position of the State not only of Mexico but of all of North America.”
In addition, he stated that he will extend “his support to continue deepening social changes in favor of the most vulnerable people, the transition towards a green and sustainable economy, and the defense of human rights.”
Lula da Silva, president of Brazil
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed his support for Sheinbaum’s victory in the runoff held on Sunday, and affirmed that, with this result, Mexican democracy is guaranteed.
“I am very happy with her victory, because she represents my great colleague López Obrador, who has led an extraordinary government. So I believe that Mexico’s democracy is guaranteed during his mandate,” Lula told reporters in Brasilia.
