‘There will be a hyper-acceleration in the use of AI,’ IBM predicts

Patrick Espinosa

Among the goals that have been set IBM by 2023 stands out help local businesses to incorporate new technological tools, as is the case of the artificial intelligence, in order to make their processes more efficient and save costs.

Patricio Espinosa, general manager of IBM Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and the Caribbean Region, He spoke about how the company is progressing, which has already been in the national territory for 85 years, and about plans for the future.

How has the company fared in recent months?

The balance of the operation has been positive. Last year worldwide we reported a historic growth of 12% year over year, which fills us with great pride. In addition, this growth allowed us to be among the technology companies that had a good appreciation in the value of their shares. In this sense, I can highlight that the company has come in the right direction.

How do they come locally and what expectations do they have?

For 85 years we have been in Colombia and without a doubt we have great expectations. We work with 88% of the largest companies in the country and our goal is to continue with a great investment focus. A sample of this commitment, a couple of years ago we announced the Digital Transformation Cognitive Center, which is the largest in Latin America, and we have just renovated our Digital Sales Center for the region located in Bogotá, where we have invested more than two million dollars. Dollars. In summary, we continue with great bets and we hope to continue working hand in hand with our allies in Colombia.

How have you been addressing the inflationary issue and the dollar?

When we sit down with companies we look to manage three important pillars. The first axis is how companies can gain speed in this digital transformation and respond to new demands. The second pillar is efficiency and companies are looking for ways to become more and more efficient and here we highlight the automation front. The third axis is the issue of cybersecurity.

It should be noted that we handle many models and have great flexibility for companies. Our value proposition is that in less than six months companies have a return on the investment they have made in technology. There may be a challenge with the dollar, but in the end the proposal is that companies can save money in the medium term.

What are the solutions that are growing?

We could highlight: data analytics, cloud and cybersecurity, all encompassed under artificial intelligence (AI) that is needed today more than ever.

One of the best examples is when we talk about the cloud and all its deployment. Today, on average, companies are managing 10 clouds and that is very complex and the only way to live with that complexity is with artificial intelligence, something that is transversal in all technologies.

How have the advantages of artificial intelligence been working with businessmen?

It has been a long process. However, we have been working with artificial intelligence for 70 years. For us, this learning began in the 50s in the IBM laboratories, where we began to talk and discuss this solution. And we’ve been making progress ever since, helping customers use this technology to make better decisions.

But it is important to note that to make better decisions, certain principles must be respected: such as the principle of transparency, the principle of data privacy, which must be something sacred, and the third principle is the issue of bias.

What are the challenges ahead for companies in terms of technology and digital transformation in the medium term?

We presented a study a couple of months ago in which we highlighted some important points. For example, 23% of the companies consulted in Colombia stated that they are already using artificial intelligence in some of their solutions or processes. Now, one of the great challenges that we see is the lack of talent and it is not a challenge for Colombia, but on a global level. There is a great demand. Another of the challenges that companies see is the prices when acquiring solutions and that the tools, in many cases, are very complex.

(See: What will the end of the world be like? ChatGPT illustrated several scenarios).

What is IBM going to focus on this year?

We will continue to support companies in their transformation so that they are more efficient, faster and more secure. And at IBM we know that this transformation will continue to accelerate during 2023. We certainly have a great framework and we know that the use of artificial intelligence will hyper-accelerate.
