Amazon and Alphabet are the new big rivals in the battle of Artificial Intelligence. Own right. For the work of many years, seasoned with some external investment, and with the effect wow of a ChatGPT that changed the course.
However, as the world looks to Apple hoping it will join them in that battle (us included), there is another tech giant that doesn’t get as many looks but To whom such an incursion would fit as much or more: Amazon.
A ChatGPT oriented to find products… ready to buy
Fifteen years ago, “search” was a synonym for Google. We went to him for anything. The rise of social platforms began to eat Google’s ground, and although it is still the king of searches and often shows the direct answer, there are some in which it is no longer the natural leader.
For example, to search for “when the time changes”, you will surely go to Google. Just like to look for that little lump that has appeared on the wrist (don’t worry, it’s just a harmless ganglion), or how long does a flight between Madrid and Istanbul last.
Instead, to search for “how to tie a tie,” “how to make a paper airplane,” or “how to make caramelized onion,” you’ll most likely turn to YouTube. If you want to look up the price of steel pans, you’ll go to Amazon. To find out what Depeche Mode’s last record was, you’ll visit Spotify. And if you want to see the viral video of the ball that the politician on duty hit yesterday, you will look for it on Twitter.
Our search has been compartmentalized in a natural way to get to the information sooner. We know the shortcuts and where to find each content. And ChatGPT and his companions at the time open a new path through which the rest will not see a sad click: information directly in the chat.
We go with Amazon.
From Amazon we know that a good part of the layoffs it recently announced have to do with both its corporate employees and its division dedicated to Alexa. We also know that Echo devices have usually been sold at a very low price, so low that they can hardly represent a profit for the company, and that these are not only used to buy in their store, but to play music, timers, and little else.
There are reasons to think that the main intention of the Echo family was Get used to buying with your voice, something that has not happened. Today it may sound bold, but a few years ago there was a certain unanimity regarding the power that conversational interfaces were going to wield in the late 2010s.
With that battle, at least, coming out regular, Amazon could benefit from such an interface, aimed at answering questions and developing answers… by placing purchase links.
Let’s imagine a rival of ChatGPT aimed at finding the ideal product for what we are looking for. For example:
- An Android mobile, with a battery that lasts two days, less than 16 centimeters in height and a telephoto lens
- A suitable memory card to record 4K video with my SLR where I can fit at least three hours and I don’t have to worry about writing speed
- A corded, battery-free beard trimmer with comb for lengths up to 30 millimeters
AND wow!, there would be the results that fit our search. Ready to press the “add to cart” button.
Even searches that do not go to specific products, but do narrate processes for which they may be necessary. For example:
- How to take care of some sneakers so they always look new
- How to unclog a toilet
- Informal ideas to dress on a day-to-day basis
And there, instructions accompanied by the appropriate links: cleaning brush, soap for leatherette, liquid plunger, skirts and shirts…
for a similar reason bought Amazon in 2007 DPReviewthe website specialized in analysis and information about cameras that coincidentally just closed: to fix ahYo their purchase links of the mentioned cameras. For a place focused on concentrating a niche to become a direct showcase to your store.
Amazon would surely do great to become the product search equivalent of YouTube for life tutorials, Twitter for breaking and viral content, Spotify for music, and Google for everything else. At least it sounds reasonable to think that it would do better than the bet on Alexa.
