US President Joe Biden on Monday criticized the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States to grant immunity to former presidents, claiming that certain actions are taken within their constitutional authority.
“This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America,” Biden said, adding that no one is above the law. With the Supreme Court’s decision, he said, “that fundamentally changed.”
Biden took direct responsibility for the ruling by the justices on the nation’s highest court, which was seen as a victory for his rival, former President Donald Trump.
The decision was the result of a vote of six judges in favor and three against, ruling for the first time that former presidents can be protected from prosecution for their official actions while occupying the White House.
But rather than do so themselves, the justices left it up to lower courts to determine precisely how to apply the ruling to Trump’s case.
“This decision means that there are virtually no limits to what a president can do,” the president warned.
In addition, Biden directly attacked his rival, the Republican Trump, whom he blamed the violent events that occurred at the Capitol in Washington January 6, 2021.
“Four years ago, my predecessor sent a violent mob to the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power; everyone saw it, he sat back and watched what was happening: attacks on police, the ransacking of the Capitol…” Biden listed.
Former President Trump has been acquitted of impeachment following the events of the day Biden’s victory was certified in the 2020 election.
Special prosecutor Jack Smith is embroiled in a process against Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. As a result, Trump faces four felony charges, two of which involve obstructing an official proceeding.
However, it is highly unlikely that Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner, will be able to face trial before the November election.
