GOMA (DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO), 7 May. (DPA/EP) –

At least 287 people have already died from the floods in recent days, as confirmed by the authorities in the South Kivu region, in the northeast of the country, well above the last balance of 182 deaths released on Saturday.

In addition, there are 205 people seriously injured and 167 missing due to the floods caused by the overflow last Thursday of several rivers in the area due to heavy rains.

The country’s president, Félix Tshisekedi, has declared a day of national mourning for next Monday and the imminent trip of a group of ministers to coordinate humanitarian aid, the government spokesman, Patrick Muyaya, has announced.

The floods and the consequent landslides have devastated in particular the state of South Kivu, right now the scene of a new rainy season that will continue throughout most of this month.

Neighboring countries such as Rwanda and Uganda have also suffered heavy flooding that has left at least 127 and six dead, respectively.
