The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has been left again this Wednesday without external power supply, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which considers these recurrent disconnections “deeply worrying”.
The director of the agency, Rafael Grossi, has reported this new loss of external power on social networks, “for the second time in five days”. The plant now depends on backup generators, which are vital to guarantee the safety of the installations and avoid a possible accident.
For Grossi, the disconnection underscores the “urgent need” for a security zone around the plant, which has been controlled by Russian forces since early March and is the frequent scene of attacks.
Moscow has shown no signs of relinquishing control of the facilities and, in fact, the annexation of the Zaporizhia region decreed by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has also led him to claim the alleged property right over the nuclear power plant.
