A Somali military court has sentenced the wife of the leader of the Islamic State branch in the country, Abdukadir Mumim, to eight years in prison for belonging to the jihadist group and financing its terrorist activities.
The woman, identified as Fartun Abdirashid Husein, was arrested in March 2022 during an operation in the capital Mogadishu, as reported by the Somali news agency SONNA.
The Somali branch of Islamic State emerged in October 2015 after a group of Al Shabaab militants split from the group and centers its operations in Puntland. Despite the fact that Mumin swore allegiance to the then leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, he did not respond or name him as the person in charge of the branch of the extremist formation in the country.
