( ) — The iconic white suit worn by John Travolta to play Tony Manero in the 1977 film “Saturday Night Fever” will go up for auction later this month by Julien’s Auctions of California.
To celebrate 100 years of pop culture history, Julien’s will hold an auction in which different items representative of Hollywood movies will be offered, including a machete used by Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones.” , the elder wand from “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and a prototype of the “Iron Man” helmet, among others.
The centerpiece of this auction, however, is the bespoke polyester suit that John Travolta wore to dance to the Bee Gees’ “More Than a Woman” in the hit film. The outfit is made up of bell-bottom pants, a jacket and a vest, but the auction will also include the shirt worn by the actor in the same scene, which still bears the “Pascal of Spain” label, traces of sweat and signs of wear, according to Julien’s.
The starting price for the suit, designed by Patrizia von Brandenstein, was $25,000 and rose to $60,000 this week, the company said, making it the most valuable item at auction. It is expected to reach an estimated value of between $100,000 and $200,000 by the time it ends on April 23.
Actor John Travolta was nominated for an Oscar for best actor in 1978 thanks to the film directed by John Badham. According to Julien’s house, in 2010 the Library of Congress recognized “Saturday Night Fever” for its cultural, historical, aesthetic value and for its contribution to the history of disco music. The film is currently on the United States National Film Registry.
