The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Politics and Security, Joseph Borrell, believes that despite Ukraine’s advances in the war and Russia’s loss of territory “you don’t have to falter” and that we must take advantage of the invasion “to get rid of energy dependency on Russia”.
About seven months after the start of the war, Borrell has also called on Europeans to “resist” in the face of energy and food prices and has asked to “continue supporting” Ukraine.
In an interview on TVE, Borrell has assured that in these months Europe has reduced Russia’s energy dependency from 40% to 10%, so the invasion of Ukraine “is the perfect opportunity” for the community bloc to be more self-sufficient.

“The war has not ended”
Although he has recognized that “all attempts” to end the war “have been useless”, Borrell has called on the EU governments to continue supporting the Ukrainian people. “This is not the time to waver. We must continue to support Ukraine. That will allow them to resist and Russia not to achieve its goals,” he said.
Along these lines, he has asked to continue sending weapons because “the war is not over and is at a critical moment”, applauding Ukraine’s advance in its own territory and Russia’s withdrawal from some occupied areas.
Borrell has made it clear that the European Union “will continue with economic sanctions on Russia” because they are weakening its economy despite the fact that their imposition has caused Moscow to cut off the gas tap.
