The video game sector in Spain has grown both in players, with the registration of more than 20 million people dedicated to this digital entertainment, and in turnover, after registering 2,339 million euros in 2023, 16.3% compared to the previous year. .
The turnover of the video game sector in Spain grew by 16.3 percent in 2023, with 2,339 million euros, compared to the 12.09 percent experienced the previous year, when it reached 2,012 million euros.
These figures place the country as the third market in the European Union, as highlighted by the Spanish Video Game Association (AEVI). Ahead, they only find the markets of Germany and France.
This growth is driven by the increase in sales both in physical format (24.85%) and online (10.25%), the first with a turnover of 1,038 million euros and the second, of 1,301 million euros, as stated in AEVI’s ‘Yearbook of the Video Game Industry in Spain in 2023’, published this Wednesday.
In physical sales, the greater importance of ‘hardware’ stands out, which accounts for a turnover of 460 million euros, while in digital sales the ‘online’ platforms stand out, with 716 million euros.
In all of these sales, the most sold are video game console games, of which 6,434,356 units are registered. They are followed by accessories (3,153,821) and the game consoles themselves (1,108,880).
Action, adventure and sports are emerging as the most popular genres, with the most purchased titles: EA SPORTS FC 24, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Hogwarts Legacy, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Fifa 23 being the best sellers.
“2023 has been a year in which the turnover of the video game industry has grown strongly, which has served to consolidate its leadership position as a cultural, entertainment and technological industry,” commented general director of AEVI, José María. Dark.
20 MILLION PLAYERS
The number of players has grown in Spain in 2023 to exceed 20 million (20.05M), a notable increase compared to the 18.2 million in 2022 and 18.1 in 2021. By gender, men continue to be the majority ( 51%) compared to women (49%), although the situation is equal.
Spanish gamers prefer the smartphone (32%), mainly with the Android operating system (30%), and consoles (31%) to play, with the laptop as the last option (8%), behind the tablet (13%). And they spend an average of 7.7 hours a week, a figure higher than the average in France (7.4 hours) and Italy (6.5 hours), but lower than the United Kingdom (10.8 hours) and Germany (10.4 hours).
