The Venezuelan PP's script is somewhat damaged by the arrival of Edmundo González

The Popular Party was shocked on Sunday when it learned that Edmundo González was travelling on a plane sent by the Government of Pedro Sánchez to bring him to Spain. It was less concerned about the situation that González had been through than the PSOE presenting itself as a defender of Nicolás Maduro’s adversaries. Before waiting to find out why the opposition candidate in the presidential elections had decided to leave Venezuela, it launched into criticising the Government for supposedly having favoured Maduro’s interests. And without thinking at all that this sounded contradictory.

“Removing Edmundo González without recognizing him (as) legitimate president is not doing democracy a favor, but to remove a problem from the dictatorship,” said Esteban González Pons. “It is not the president-elect of Venezuela who should have been given a silver bridge, but the criminal usurper,” wrote Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo. At the height of her delirium, Paloma Martín almost insulted González: “The president-elect of Venezuela should not leave his country “like a criminal.”
