The US will send about 67 million euros in humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

July 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Undersecretary for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights of the United States, Uzra Zeya, has announced that the North American country will send more than 74 million dollars (about 67 million euros) in humanitarian aid to Bangladesh.

Of that amount, some 61 million dollars (about 54 million euros) will be destined to support the Rohingya minority both in the camps for internally displaced persons in Burma and the refugee communities in Bangladesh, according to a statement from the State Department of the United States. Joined.

For her part, Zeya added after a meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, that the aid will serve to “provide food, drinking water, medical care, protection, education, shelter and psychosocial support,” she has published on her account. Twitter.

This new shipment adds to a total of 2.1 billion dollars (1.9 billion euros) since August 2017, when the Rohingya “fled genocide, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing” carried out by the Burmese Army.

Humanitarian assistance will cover some 980,000 Rohingya refugees and 540,000 “generous” guests and their communities.

In addition, the United States has applauded “the generosity” of both the government and the people of Bangladesh for welcoming the refugees, and has expressed concern about the escalation of violence “promoted” by the Burmese military junta.

The Rohingya are an ethnic minority of the Muslim faith that is concentrated in the Burmese state of Rakhine (or Arakan, as the Rohingya call it). Burma considers them descendants of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and does not recognize them as citizens, thereby depriving them of basic rights.

The Burmese authorities are being investigated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) this year after the Gambia filed a complaint for alleged genocide against the Rohingya population in the Asian country.
