June 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The US State Department has approved a possible arms sale to Taiwan for a value of 440 million dollars (about 400 million euros).
Included in the sale is a package with 30-millimeter ammunition (high-explosive incendiary tracer rounds, multipurpose rounds and training rounds) and other types of calibers, as well as the necessary logistical and programmatic support, all valued at 332.2 million dollars (306 million euros), according to a press release published by the department.
The second package consists of spare parts and repair parts for wheeled vehicles, weapons and other support items valued at 108 million dollars (99 million euros).
In addition, Congress has been informed this Thursday, and has been assured that Taiwan will pay for the sale with its own funds. This shipment will serve “the national, economic and security interests” of the country, as well as “modernize” and “sustain” the Taiwan Army, as well as help “maintain political stability, military balance and economic progress in the region”.
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region,” the statement reads, as China and the United States are in a moment of tension over the latter’s support for Taiwan, which the Asian giant considers as a rebellious province but under its sovereignty.
