The US welcomes the fact that London has announced new legislation that expands its powers to sanction Iran

July 7 () –

The Government of the United States has celebrated this Thursday the announcement of the United Kingdom to prepare a new legislation that allows to extend the regime of sanctions against Iran in order to “punish its leaders” for their “hostile actions”.

“We welcome the UK’s announcement of its plans to create a new sanctions authority to hold Iran accountable for its hostile activities,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

Miller has indicated that he will support both London and the international community to “counter Iran’s destabilizing actions, its proliferation of weapons, its brutal repression at home and its threats against people around the world.”

“The United States encourages the adoption of additional measures by all like-minded partners to deal with Iran’s hostile actions,” said the spokesman, who reiterated the US determination to work with allies to “deter and respond to any threat or attack by Iran”.

It has also condemned “once again” the “Iran plots” against foreign citizens, including Americans. “Iran’s hostile activities are in stark contrast to US efforts to seek de-escalation and ensure a more integrated and prosperous Middle East region,” she said.

The British authorities have also announced this Thursday sanctions against thirteen individuals and entities related to the “violation of Human Rights” in Tehran, alleging that “the Iranian regime is oppressing its own people” and has warned that the country “threatens to kill and hijack on British soil”.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has said London sends a “clear message to the regime that it will not tolerate this malign behavior and those responsible will be brought to justice.” “Our new sanctions regime will help ensure that there is no safe place for those who want to harm us,” he said.
