The United States has positively assessed the telephone call – the first since the start of the Russian invasion – between the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, although it has asked to wait and see if it will lead to “some kind of significant peace movement, plan or proposal”.

“We welcome the news that there was a phone call between President Xi and President Zelensky. We think it’s a good thing,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“We have been saying for quite some time that we believe it is important that President Xi and the Chinese authorities take advantage of the Ukrainian perspective on this illegal and unprovoked invasion,” Kirby said.

“If this will lead to some kind of significant peace movement, plan or proposal, I don’t think we know at this time,” said Kirby, who has assured that the White House was not aware that this call was going to take place and that They didn’t “necessarily” have it either, reports .

Asked if China could help negotiate a future peace agreement, Kirby has reiterated that in any type of “credible” negotiation it must involve President Zelensky “personally” and contain the conditions that Ukraine establishes.

According to Zelenski, the conversation with Xi has been “significant” and he has shown his confidence that it has served to boost diplomatic relations between the two countries. Beijing, for its part, has reported that it will send a delegation to Ukraine to speak “with all parties” about a “peaceful solution” to the conflict.
