These statements come after the Georgian Police arrested this Wednesday the leader of the opposition and pro-European Ahali party, Nika Gvaramia, during a raid on the party’s headquarters in Tbilisi, the country’s capital, as tension increases. after six consecutive days of protests against the Government, which they accuse of taking the country away from the path to European integration.

In this sense, the State Department has urged the ruling party to abandon its “repressive tactics to silence its critics”, warning of the violence carried out by law enforcement during the protests.

The organization has called for the “immediate” release of the detained protesters and for the agents “responsible for the illegitimate use of force” to be held accountable.

“The United States is preparing to use the instruments we have at our disposal, including additional sanctions,” he said, recalling the annulment, last Saturday, of its strategic agreement with the country.

These operations take place as new protests are registered in the capital, where opponents of the Government continue to demand a repeat election because they consider that the parliamentary elections at the end of October were held fraudulently.
