The US uses the Summit of the Americas to reach an economic understanding with the region

The governments of Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Panama signed an economic memorandum of understanding with the United States on Monday, as a continuation of the agreements reached at the Summit of the Americas held in June past.

The agreement is focused on promoting the “Supply Chains and Economic Growth between the United States and the Alliance for Development in Democracy”, known as the ADD.

The representatives of each country held a meeting with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce in Washington, the State Department reported in a statement.

“Today’s meeting in Washington DC builds on the momentum of the Summit of the Americas and will deepen economic cooperation and help generate economic growth in the region. Together with our partners, the United States is focused on practical steps to create a better environment for democracy and private sector investment.

Ecuador is the most recent member of the alliance, an organization constituted as “an informal space for dialogue and strategic coordination.”

Guyana on the US radar

Earlier on Monday, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, received the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, for a meeting to discuss current energy, climate and cooperation on food issues.

“We are working together in our region and beyond to try to find solutions to the challenges … to include climate, to include food security, energy security,” Blinken said, underlining the follow-up visit to the commitments of the Summit of the Americas held in the city of Los Angeles.

While Ali assured: “We are looking for an energy pact that manages to balance our new natural resources of oil and gas, but we are not doing it to the detriment of our obligations on the environment and climate change.”
