The US shows its concern about the Hungarian law against foreign interference for "attacking" human rights

June 28 () –

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed concern Thursday about Hungary’s anti-foreign interference law, saying that one of the offices created under the law has no restrictions on “violating” human rights.

“The United States is deeply concerned by the Hungarian government’s application of the ‘Sovereignty Act,’ including the draconian measures taken this week by the newly created Sovereignty Protection Office against the activities of civil society and independent media organizations,” Miller said in a statement.

In that sense, he has asserted that the Government of Hungary intends to “harass, intimidate and punish” different independent organizations, and has criticized the law for “not putting any limit” on the capacity of the newly created office to “attack ” against the Human Rights and fundamental freedoms of Hungarian citizens.

“This law places no limit on this entity’s ability to violate the human rights and fundamental freedoms of its own citizens and endangers any country, business entity or individual that decides to associate with them. The United States will continue to defend the protection of civil society organizations and the freedom of the media against these undemocratic measures,” he added.
