The United States on Monday expressed its concern over Israel’s announcement of the construction of 5,700 new houses in settlements in the West Bank.
“We are deeply concerned by the alleged decision by the Israeli government to advance planning for more than 4,000 settlements in the West Bank. We are equally concerned by reports of changes to Israel’s settlement management system that expedite settlement planning and approval.” , declared the State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, during a press conference.
“Based on long-held policy, the United States opposes such unilateral actions that hinder the achievement of a two-state solution and are an obstacle to peace, and we call on the Government of Israel to comply with the commitments made in Aqaba (Jordan) and Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) and return to dialogue aimed at de-escalation”, he added.
For his part, the spokesman for the United States Security Council, John Kirby, has assured that the president of the United States, Joe Biden, remains “committed” to the “value” and “viability” of a two-state solution in reference to the declarations of the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he has called for “eradicating the idea of establishing a Palestinian state”.
The number of new homes announced this Monday exceeds the 4,427 homes announced throughout 2022. In total this year it has announced the construction of 13,082 homes, above the previous annual record of 12,159, corresponding to 2020.
