The United States Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions against three people and four companies linked to a Lebanese network that served to evade sanctions by Hezbollah, as well as three other people involved in the production and trafficking of Captagon, whose Profits would have gone to the Syrian regime and its allies, including the Lebanese militia.
The aforementioned sanctions evasion network, based in Lebanon, would have generated millions of dollars in income for Hezbollah, whose financial department is responsible for the group’s commercial projects in Lebanese territory, some of which are financed by Iran, as reported. The Treasury Department detailed in a statement.
On the other hand, regarding the Captagon production and trafficking network, the Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Bradley T. Smith, has highlighted that it demonstrates that the group finances its operations with drug trafficking, further evidence of the “destabilizing influence” of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the entire Middle East.
The illegal trade in Captagon, “a dangerous and highly addictive amphetamine,” has become a multibillion-dollar illicit enterprise operated by senior members of Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s regime, U.S. authorities say.
“The United States sanctions three individuals and four companies that generate income for Hezbollah. We also sanctioned individuals involved in the illicit production and trafficking of Captagon, a dangerous amphetamine that constitutes a source of financing for the Al Assad regime and Hezbollah,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on his social networks regarding the sanctions.
