The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has insisted to his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, on the need to establish measures that provide “governance, security and reconstruction” once the conflict in the Gaza Strip ends, after Al Fatah, the party of the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) have reached an agreement for the creation of a joint committee for the management of the Palestinian enclave once the offensive ends Israeli military.
Blinken had a conversation with the Egyptian Foreign Minister during a call in which he thanked him for holding, earlier this week, a summit with the United Nations in which they were asked to agree on a “recovery strategy” that paves the path to the reconstruction of the Strip after a ceasefire agreement that puts an end to more than a year of “humanitarian catastrophe” in the Palestinian enclave.
During the call, the secretary highlighted “the importance of ensuring that humanitarian assistance reaches vulnerable civilians in Gaza, including through humanitarian pauses to improve the movement and distribution of aid,” the State Department spokesperson reported. , Matthew Miller, in a brief statement.
These statements come after Al Fatah and Hamas signed a document on Tuesday in which they agreed to create a joint committee to manage affairs in the Gaza Strip once the offensive launched by the Israeli Army against the enclave concludes.
The document has been published just one day after the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Samé Shukri, confirmed that two delegations from Fatah and Hamas were in the capital for talks focused precisely on trying to reach an agreement on this management committee under control of the Palestinian Authority.
The talks are part of a broader mediation effort by Egypt to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza between Hamas and Israel, which launched an offensive against the enclave following the October 7, 2023 attacks by the Islamist group and other Palestinian factions, which left around 1,200 dead and around 250 kidnapped.
The Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip has left more than 44,500 Palestinians dead to date, according to data published by the Gazan authorities, controlled by Hamas. Added to this toll of victims are nearly 800 Palestinians killed at the hands of Israeli forces and in attacks carried out by settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 7, 2023.
