The US reiterates its support for the UN envoy for the Sahara without evaluating the possible partition of the territory

MADRID 22 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Government reiterated this Tuesday its support for the UN special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in his efforts to reach a solution “acceptable” for all parties, although it has avoided evaluating the partition proposal. of the territory raised last week by the Italian-Swedish diplomat.

A spokesperson for the North American State Department has indicated in statements to Europa Press that they prefer not to evaluate the statements made “during closed-door consultations”, to the extent that De Mistura launched the idea in a private session of the UN Security Council. .

This spokesperson, however, did want to “make it clear” that Washington will continue to support De Mistura’s work while “intensifying” its contacts to “advance in negotiations that lead to a mutually acceptable solution for Western Sahara without further delays.” .

De Mistura has recovered an idea that one of his predecessors, James Baker, proposed more than two decades ago, to divide the former Spanish colony in two, so that Morocco could apply the autonomy that he suggests in the northern area and the Polisario Front. preserve the right of self-determination in the southern part. Both the Moroccan Government and the Polisario have made their rejection clear.

However, the mere recovery of this idea has reopened the debate on potential alternative formulas to resolve the conflict and has led to an explicit request from De Mistura to Rabat to explain in detail what the autonomy plan formulated in 2007 consists of. by King Mohamed VI.
