The US reaffirms its ties with South Korea in the face of the impeachment against Yoon: "it transcends any president"

MADRID Dec. 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Government has reaffirmed this Thursday its alliance with South Korea, which “transcends any particular president”, while the National Assembly is preparing to vote on an impeachment motion against the South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, for the adoption and subsequent revocation of martial law.

“This relationship, this alliance, this partnership that we have with the Republic of Korea… transcends any particular president or government on both sides of the Pacific Ocean,” said State Department deputy spokesman Vedant at a press conference. Patel.

“This is a collaborative alliance that has transcended Republicans, Democrats, different administrations in our Government, and that (continues) to be the same in the Republic of Korea,” he added.

Asked about the impeachment motion against the South Korean president, Patel said that it is an “internal” issue, reiterating the hope of the US authorities that the process will be carried out in accordance with the Constitution of the Asian country. “We continue to hope that the democratic system and the democratic process of the Republic of Korea will prevail,” he said.

“We continue to support the rule of law and democracy in the Republic of Korea, which we consider the fundamental pillars of our alliance,” he declared.

Likewise, the spokesperson highlighted South Korea’s “democratic resistance” at a time of “trials and uncertainty.” It should be remembered that the National Assembly overturned the martial law decreed by the president only hours before, in an extraordinary session amid scenes of chaos both inside and outside the headquarters of the main legislative body of South Korea, shortly after the head of state Major of the Armed Forces, Park An Soo, considered any type of political activity null and void.
