22 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The United States government has reiterated to the UN envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, Washington’s “full support” for his mediation work and has advocated continuing to take steps towards a “durable and dignified political solution” for the Saharawi population.
De Mistura has met at the State Department with Antony Blinken’s ‘number two’, Wendy Sherman, who has supported the envoy’s intention to “intensify” contacts. Both have called to take advantage of the momentum of the informal consultations in March to continue advancing in the dialogue, according to a statement.
The negotiation process remains bogged down and the two opposing parties hold immovable positions. The Moroccan government only contemplates a limited autonomy for the former Spanish colony, while the Polisario Front claims the right of self-determination.
