The governments of the United States, Japan and South Korea issued a statement this Sunday condemning the military cooperation treaty between North Korea and Russia, which includes a defense clause in the event of aggression, considering that it “destabilizes” both to the European continent and northeast Asia.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the deepening of military cooperation between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Russia, including the continued arms transfers from the DPRK to Russia that prolong the suffering of the Ukrainian people, violate multiple resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and threaten stability in both Northeast Asia and Europe,” reads the joint statement shared by the US State Department.
Furthermore, they have assured that this cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang “should seriously concern anyone” interested in maintaining peace and stability both on the Korean Peninsula and the defense of Ukraine and even the international Non-Proliferation treaties.
The three countries have confirmed their intention to continue strengthening their diplomatic and security cooperation to “counter threats” from North Korea.
The United States, for its part, has reaffirmed its commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan, although it continues to open the door to dialogue with North Korea, which it has asked to “cease its provocations” and resume dialogue.
Tensions between North and South Korea have risen in recent months as efforts to get both countries to sign a peace agreement have stalled. Pyongyang and Seoul are still technically at war, since the Korean War (1950-1953) ended with an armistice, with no definitive agreement since then.
