The US hopes to re-anchor the pier to the coast of Gaza "at the end of this week"

June 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States has stated that it hopes to be able to re-anchor the pier to the coast of the Gaza Strip “later this week” following repairs to the parts in the port of Ashdod after the waves dismantled part of the structure, which allows the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.

“As soon as the temporary dock is re-anchored on the beach in Gaza, we expect aid to begin flowing fairly immediately,” deputy Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh explained at a press conference.

Likewise, he has reported that the Biden Administration has recalculated the cost of the dock, which was previously set at 320 million dollars (294 million euros), and that due to adjustments in expenses the total investment in the structure has been reduced to 230 million dollars (211 million euros).

Singh announced last week that aid delivery to agencies working in Gaza was being suspended because part of the dock had been taken offline following an “unfortunate confluence of weather storms” in the area. At least two American ships used to unload aid ran aground.

The floating dock was completed in mid-May by US authorities, although humanitarian organizations have warned that its capacity is insufficient and that the land crossings would need to be reopened to facilitate the arrival of aid via trucks.

Shipments to the dock built by the Biden Administration arrive through the maritime corridor opened in March from Cyprus to try to increase aid to Gaza in the face of the restrictions imposed by Israel on land crossings.
