25 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Vedant Patel, reported on Tuesday that Washington has issued nearly 100 visas for Russian citizens, including journalists, as part of the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the United Nations headquarters.

“Regarding the visit of the Foreign Minister (of Russia, Sergei) Lavrov, the United States issued about a hundred visas for Russian citizens, also including an (undetermined) number of journalists,” he said at a press conference.

Patel has also ruled that the United States “takes seriously its obligations as a country” that houses the UN headquarters while recalling “Russia’s repression against independent media and press freedom.”

For his part, Lavrov has stated at a press conference from New York that Moscow will take into account the “disgraceful behavior” of the US side when Washington “needs something,” the TASS news agency has reported.

The Russian government already indicated last week that the United States “has abused its position as the country that hosts the UN headquarters” in relation to the issuance of visas for the Russian delegation to attend the meetings. Russia presides over the UN Security Council this April.
