The deputy cybersecurity advisor of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Anne Neuberger, warned this Wednesday of the growing “threats to the security” of submarine cables, in a meeting with her counterparts from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden, in which they have addressed public-private cooperation strategies to improve their protection.
The White House confirmed the meeting in a statement in which it warned of the growing “threats to the security” of this infrastructure, essential “for almost all aspects of essential public services, international trade and digital economic prosperity.” , in light of recent failures or alleged sabotage in the Baltic Sea.
The experts have shared “concerns” in this regard and have agreed to deepen “public-private cooperation to improve regional security (…) and protect critical underwater infrastructure”, including NATO.
The main objective of this collaboration is, among others, to “harmonize channels and procedures for sharing” real-time information, including incidents, within national governments, between allied countries, as well as between commercial cable operators.
This meeting comes after the Atlantic Alliance launched earlier this week a new naval surveillance operation in the Baltic Sea to increase military presence and deter any attack in this area, the scene of recent incidents with submarine cables, a military activity that It will involve frigates, air patrol aircraft, underwater satellites and surveillance drones.
