The United States National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, held a telephone conversation this Thursday with the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, in which he transferred Washington’s support to Tirana after learning of Iran’s cyberattack against government services of Albanian.
During the call, Sullivan and Rama agreed to continue working together on “repair” efforts and bolstering Albania’s cybersecurity measures after an attack that authorities in the European country say destroyed data and overwhelmed government services.
On the other hand, Sullivan took the opportunity to thank the Albanian head of government for his “generous welcome of Afghan citizens” who have fled from the Asian country since August 2021, the date on which the Taliban came to power. Finally, both have addressed “regional and global issues”, including matters of the Atlantic Alliance.
The Albanian government confirmed on Wednesday the breaking of diplomatic relations with Iran in response to this incident, a decision that Tehran called “reckless and short-sighted” and based on “unfounded claims.”
Prime Minister Rama acknowledged that the measure, although “extreme”, is “proportionately direct” with “the seriousness and danger” of the cyber attack perpetrated by Iran, which “threatened to paralyze public services, end systems and steal data state”.
