The Secretary of the US State Department, Antony Blinken, congratulated this Friday the president-elect of Botswana, the opposition Duma Boko, for his victory in the elections on October 30 and expressed the US commitment to the country in the long run. term.
Blinken has celebrated these latest elections in the African country as “a testimony to the resilience and unity of the people of Botswana to forge their future” and has “praised” the outgoing president, Mokgsweetsi Masisi, “for his leadership”, praising “his commitment to democratic principles, as he has demonstrated with his promise to support the next Government and his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.
The State Department has also conveyed Washington’s “pride” in its “strong partnership with Botswana, its people and its leaders” and has reaffirmed its “support for (the country’s) long-standing commitment to democracy,” as well as the “shared partnership” between both States on a basis of “common values.”
The president of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, recognized this Friday the defeat of his party in the parliamentary elections and congratulated the winner, the opposition Duma Boko, after a hard setback at the polls that puts an end to more than 60 years of domination by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), leading the country since its independence in 1966.
The BDP, led by Masisi, has dominated Botswana politics since the country gained independence, although this time it went to the polls after years of tensions between Masisi and his predecessor in office, Ian Khama, and in the face of worsening of the economic situation due to the fall in the sale of diamonds, the main source of income for its economy.
