The United States Department of State confirmed this Tuesday that North Korean troops have begun participating in combat operations alongside the Russian Armed Forces against the Ukrainian ones in the Russian Kursk region, where kyiv began its first cross-border incursion in the summer.
“We are extremely concerned by Russia’s decision to turn to North Korea to supply soldiers to continue its brutal war against Ukraine. Today I can confirm that more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to eastern Russia, and most of them have moved to the far west of the Kursk region, where they have begun to participate in combat operations with Russian forces,” deputy spokesman Vedant Patel explained at a press conference.
While he has highlighted that Russian authorities have trained North Korean soldiers in skills “fundamental for frontline operations”, such as artillery and drones, he has maintained that “Russia’s success on the battlefield using these troops will largely depend on measure of how well the Russians can integrate them into their Army.
Patel, who highlighted that among the “challenges” that Moscow and Pyongyang face include “interoperability, the language barrier, command and control and communications,” he stated that Washington is consulting “closely” with its partners. and allies, as well as with other countries in the region, about the implications of these events.
Ukrainian troops launched an incursion into the Russian province in August, managing to take over a hundred towns, according to kyiv, in an unprecedented operation since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. However, as the weeks passed, The Russian Army has been managing to recover territory.
