March 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Pro-Iranian militias have fired at least seven rockets at a US military base in northeastern Syria in retaliation for an earlier US attack following the death of a contractor.
The attack took place against the base near the Al Omar oil field and, at the moment, there is no record of victims, according to a source from the United States Department of Defense to Fox News.
The rockets have not caused significant damage to military installations either, according to the same source.
The latest incidents began on Thursday afternoon, when an attack by these militias left a contractor dead and six wounded, identified as five US service members and another contractor.
In response, US President Joe Biden ordered a series of strikes against facilities used by “affiliated groups” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported that these attacks have killed eight suspected pro-Iranian fighters, while the death toll may rise as several are injured, some of them in critical condition.
The body, based in London and informants in the Arab country, has explained that Washington has directed its attacks against an arms depot in Deir Ezzor, where six of the victims would have died; and another militia hideout on the outskirts of the city of Mayadin, where the other two were reportedly killed.
According to the observatory, the militias would have mobilized some of their forces to face possible new attacks, while on Friday morning they would have launched new projectiles against the military base of the international coalition; an operation finally confirmed by the United States.
