The United States condemned this Wednesday the “brutal and unjustified violence” exercised by the Government of Georgia against protesters and warned that it could impose new sanctions.
“The United States strongly condemns the brutal and unjustified violence of the Georgian Dream party against citizens, protesters, members of the media and opposition figures,” said the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinkenin a statement.
Blinken stressed that those who undermine democratic processes or institutions in Georgia, including those who repress citizens’ right to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, “they will have to face the consequences”.
The head of US diplomacy announced that Washington will use the tools at its disposal, including sanctions, to punish those who repress the protesters.
Thousands of Georgians gathered again this Wednesday in front of Parliament, on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi, to demand the resumption of accession negotiations with the European Union.
Since Thursday, more than 300 protesters have been arrested and more than a hundred people have had to receive medical attention for injuries.
