The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, announced this Sunday that the White House has committed an additional 100 million dollars (about 93 million euros) in aid for Turkey and Syria after the earthquakes that have left more than 44,000 dead in both countries, reports the chain TGRT Haber.
Blinken is in Turkey, fresh from the Munich Security Conference, to show US support for the Turkish government and hopes to meet next Monday with the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The United States, it should be remembered, deployed several search and rescue teams in Turkey the day after the earthquake, with a total of about 200 people, and delivered an initial tranche of 85 million dollars (almost 80 million euros) in humanitarian aid.
Before the announcement, Blinken flew over the southern province of Hatay, the most affected by the earthquakes, accompanied by his Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and the US ambassador to Turkey, Jeffry Flake, reports the Turkish channel TV 100.
