The United States Army has announced this Thursday the death of seven suspected members of Al Shabaab in a bombardment carried out on Tuesday against the terrorist group “in support” of Somali forces in a “remote area” near Galmudug.
The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has indicated in a statement that the airstrike was carried out “at the request of the federal government of Somalia” in what it has described as “a collective self-defense bombing.”
“The bombardment was carried out in a remote area near Galmudug, Somalia, some 510 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu,” he said, while stressing that “given the remoteness of the location, the command estimates that there are no civilians dead or wounded.”
He also stressed that “Somalia continues to be key to the stability and security of East Africa” and added that both AFRICOM and the allied forces “will continue to analyze the results of this operation and provide additional information.”
“The Federal Government of Somalia and AFRICOM will continue to take great measures to prevent civilian casualties. Protecting civilians is a crucial part of command operations to promote greater security for all Africans,” he added.
Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
