The US Assistant Secretary of State for O.Próximo begins a regional tour with Iran as the dominant theme

June 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The US Undersecretary of State for the Middle East, Barbara Leaf, began a regional tour this Sunday, beginning with Israel, to discuss with the authorities the current situation in the area and, in particular, the current state of the difficult negotiations to reactivate the nuclear deal with Iran.

Leaf’s visit, in this sense, takes place after both Washington and Tehran denied at the beginning of the month the existence of a “provisional agreement” in this regard, which would have meant an extraordinary advance in the situation, five years after that the then president of the United States, Donald Trump, mortally wounded the agreement after withdrawing his country unilaterally.

The talks for the restoration of the 2015 nuclear agreement have been stalled for months, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed progress in the program by the Iranian authorities, who maintain that it has only peaceful purposes.

During his stay in Israel throughout this morning, Leaf will meet with “senior political and military officials of the country” to discuss, according to the State Department, “containment measures on Iran’s destabilizing behavior,” before traveling to Israel. Ramallah (West Bank) to comment on the tense state of Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Tonight, Leaf will leave for Jordan, a country of extreme regional importance by acting as custodian of the holy sites of Jerusalem.
