The United States has announced the death of a senior member of the armed group Hurras al Din, linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, in a bombing carried out on Monday in the Syrian province of Idlib, located in the northwest of the country.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed in a statement a “kinetic bombing” against Abu Hamza al Yemeni when “he was traveling alone on a motorcycle.” “The initial review does not point to civilian casualties”; he has added.
Thus, he stressed that “the elimination of this high position will alter Al Qaeda’s ability to carry out attacks against US citizens, partners and innocent civilians around the world.”
“Violent extremist organizations, including those linked to al Qaeda such as Hurras al Din, continue to pose a threat to the United States and its allies.” “Al Qaeda-aligned militiamen use Syria as a safe zone to coordinate their external affiliates and plan operations outside of Syria,” he stressed.
The bombing is the second US operation so far this month against jihadist leaders in Syria. Thus, coalition forces arrested a senior Islamic State official in northern Syria on June 16, a suspect who was identified as Hani Ahmed al Kurdi.
Separately, US special forces killed then-Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi in an operation in Idlib, near the Turkish border, on February 3.
