The US announces a package of 480 million euros of humanitarian aid for the Syrian population

September 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Government announced this Thursday a package of 535 million dollars (about 480 million euros) of humanitarian aid to help the more than 16.7 million Syrians in need within the Arab country and for the five millions who are refugees in the Middle East region.

The Undersecretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, explained on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that assistance will be provided through its international partners and NGOs on the ground to “meet the needs of refugees, internally displaced persons and the most vulnerable host communities” and to “provide vital support and protection to host communities, refugees and asylum seekers”.

The budget will cover emergency shelter needs; healthcare; water, sanitation and hygiene supplies; access to medical care and education; livelihood support; and protection for those who are in vulnerable situations.

Zeya has highlighted that the current conditions in Syria do not allow the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of refugees, and has appealed for a political solution based on resolution 2254 of the United Nations Security Council to end “the suffering of the Syrian people,” according to a statement from the State Department.

“The United States will continue to promote respect for the dignity and human rights of all Syrians and will continue to support Syrian civil society in its pursuit of justice and accountability for human rights violations and abuses,” he added.
